Tribute

Sophia was born February 5, 1928, at Holy Rosary Hospital, Ontario, Oregon. Her parents were Roy Strode and Mary McConnell Strode. Her first home was in Mahogany Mountain, Oregon, where visitors only ventured once or twice a year because of the tremendous snowfalls. Sophia’s mother home schooled Sophia and her brother, Tom, until they moved to Rockville, Oregon, where she and her brother slept in a tent on the dirt floor, next to a school house. Sophia then moved to Succor Creek, where she and her brother rode their horses 5 miles to school. If the snow was too deep, or it was too cold, Sophia’s dad took her and her brother to school in a wagon, which he heated with hot rocks that he had warmed on the cook stove.
In 1938, Sophia and her family moved to Caldwell, where they lived in an apartment building on Dearborn Street. Tom and Sophia were upset because they had to give up their horses, dogs, cats and other animals.
In 1945, Sophia and her family moved to the corner of Kimball and Freeport, just across the street from where Sophia and Raleigh would live for more than 50 years.
Sophia graduated from Caldwell High School in 1947, and continued to attend High School Reunions up to the present.
Sophia loved attending dances in Jordan Valley and Claytonia with her brother, Tom.
Sophia had many different jobs during her lifetime, but she did work at Caldwell Bowl for 29 years.
Sophia began bowling in organized leagues in 1952, and had a perfect attendance record until she fractured her shoulder in 2012. Sophia loved bowling and the comradery of the ladies’ leagues in Caldwell, and continued to bowl until 2021. She was the oldest “Gutter Gussie” (Card No. 13) at a recent Gutter Gussie Tournament.
Sophia married Paul Johnston on Christmas Day in 1947, but the marriage only lasted 28 days. Because a divorce cost $75.00, it took Sophia three years to save up the money!
Sophia then married Raleigh Scott on August 13, 1967, in Battle Mountain, Nevada, and helped him raise his two sons, Mike and Greg. She and Raleigh were married until his death in 2011.
Sophia is preceded in death by her husband, Raleigh, her father, her mother, and her brother.
