Sonia Karen Huyck

Sonia Karen Hagenson Huyck passed away on June 23, 2022, after a courageous and grueling 11 month battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born July 15, 1944, in Helena, Montana, to Sylvan and Virginia Hagenson. Her family moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota, when she was 1. She lived there until graduating from Northern State University in 1965. She married the love of her life Ronald Huyck on July 31, 1965, exactly one year after their first date. Their love for teaching brought them to Caldwell. Ron and Sonia had two children, Ryan and Melisa. After working as a teacher, she worked for an investment company for many years. She enjoyed being a swimming official, tending to her garden, camping, and spending time with family and friends.
Once they retired from their "regular" professions, they built the home of their dreams which required them to both learn how to farm. They also provided full-time daycare to their granddaughters, Kylin and Shaelyn. They attended as many of their school activities and sports as they could. Even though she retired from teaching she enjoyed being a substitute and classroom aide at Greenleaf Friends Academy. Her favorite part was not the teaching but building a bond and sharing her life story with the kids. She was a regular attendee to the College of Idaho football and basketball games.
She is survived by her Husband Ronald Duanne Huyck; son, Ryan (Lori) Huyck; daughter Melisa (Tom) Huyck Olsen; granddaughters, Kylin and Shaelyn Olsen; and lifetime friends, Pat Brownell and Alice Sweet. She was preceeded in death by her parents and sister.
Funeral services will be at the Dakan Funeral Chapel in Caldwell on Friday, July 1, at 10:30 am with a reception following. Attendees are asked to wear Christmas themed attire to celebrate Sonia's favorite holiday/season.
In lieu of flowers, the family graciously requests donations be made to the Greenleaf Friends Academy girls sports program or the College of Idaho Women's Soccer Team (where Kylin attends and Shaelyn plans to attend).
