MARIE FUGATE BAIRD
January 12,1935 - December 31, 2020
Marie Fugate Baird, 85, of Caldwell, Idaho passed away on the 31st day of December, 2020.
Marie was born January 12, 1935 in Caldwell, the daughter of Archie and Letha Fugate.
Marie attended Caldwell High School, The College of Idaho, and completed her music
education degree at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington in 1956.
She met her husband, Theodore (Ted) Baird while teaching elementary music for the Shoreline
School District in Seattle. They enjoyed 62 years together. After Ted’s Army service, the young
couple settled in Long Beach, California where they raised their family, then moved to Caldwell
in 1984, where they made their home on the rim on Canyon Hill overlooking the ever-changing
Boise River valley.
While in Long Beach, Marie shared her musical talents as a piano accompanist for many choirs
and soloists. She continued to share her piano skills in Caldwell supporting many young
musicians. She is remembered as a wonderful mother, gracious, beautiful, loving and nurturing,
with a great sense of humor. Until the end, Marie amazed us with her fantastic memory for
family history , and the specific recall of time, place and person for life events , large and small.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband Ted, her parents, and her brother William (Bill)
Fugate. She is survived by her children, Laurie Baird McElroy (Kevin) and Ted Baird, Jr (Hedy),
five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Cremation is under the direction of Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell. Marie will be inurned with
husband Ted at Canyon Hill Cemetery. The family thanks all of the exceptional caregivers and
the compassionate medical staff from Canyon Hospice who helped us fulfill Mom’s wish to age
in place and pass peacefully at home.
To honor Marie’s musical legacy and support future young artists, the family suggests that
memorials may be given to the Music Department at The College of Idaho.
