In March 1944, the family moved to Parma, Idaho, where Leonard attended school. He loved playing sports, especially tennis. His sophomore year, he took State in Boys Singles and qualified for the National Tournament in Springfield, Indiana. He graduated from Parma High School in 1954, attended one term at Brigham Young University and returned to Parma to farm with his father.
Leonard served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Norway from September 1956 to April 1959. Upon his return, he joined the Idaho Air National Guard where he completed six years of service on the Fire and Rescue Crew.
On March 21, 1961 Leonard married Bonnie Anderson in the Idaho Falls Temple and together raised ten children: Karla (Dave Bitter, Orem, UT); Alan Bruce (Connie Thueson, Parma, ID); Julie (Tom Kearney, Portland, OR); Nanci (Charles Grilliot, Normal, IL); Kathy (Darryl Woolley); Douglas H (Heather Jensen, Idaho Falls, ID); Craig Leonard (Maria Manzanares); Diana (Adam Wariner, Spring, TX); Lora (Ian Strawn, Kennewick, WA) and Melissa (Jeremy Despain, Draper, UT).
Leonard loved farming with his father and later, his own sons. He had a passion for sports. He was an avid BYU fan throughout his life and loved watching Parma high school teams, particularly his own children and grandchildren. His family and the Lord meant everything to him. He had a great sense of humor, a gentle heart and looked for the best in people. He served faithfully in various positions in the Church. With Bonnie, he served for four years in the Boise Idaho Temple, and as Senior Missionaries for 18 months in both the South Africa Johannesburg Temple and later at The Boise Bishop’s Storehouse.
Leonard passed from this life to join his parents, two brothers, three grandchildren and numerous extended family members and friends on December 30, 2018. Married for 57 years, he is survived by his wife, Bonnie Anderson Weber, his ten children and their spouses, 42 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren and his mother-in-law, Thora Anderson, age 98.
