Leland Edgar Grint

November 11, 1933 ~ July 12, 2017 (age 83) 83 Years Old
Leland E. Grint was born November 11, 1933 to Sydney and Josephine Grint in Sargent, Nebraska. At the age of 83, after a brief battle with Leukemia, Leland passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at his home in Nampa, Idaho with his family by his side. The 4th of 6 brothers he was raised on the family farm. Early in his education he attended a one-room country schoolhouse. Later he attended high school in Sargent where he walked 4 miles, both ways, uphill, barefooted.
After graduation, Leland worked for his brother Donald in Grand Island, Nebraska when he met the love of his life, Jean Hawley. They were married June 5, 1955 in Litchfield, Nebraska. Shortly after marriage, Jean’s Uncle Russ hired Leland and taught him the electrical trade. That following year Rick was born in Grand Island. In 1956, they moved back to Sargent to work on the family farm. That next year in the spring of 1957, Bruce was born. 5 years later, the family was blessed with a little girl and Cindy was born. Leland and his family moved to Idaho in 1964 where he started working for Hoff Companies at their saw mill in Horseshoe Bend. Their son Dustin was born in October of 1973.
While living in Horseshoe Bend, Leland was a member of the volunteer fire department as well as the local chapter of Jaycees. He was awarded their first “Community Spirit Award” in 1974-1975 for his unselfish dedication in community improvement projects. He also served on the board for the Community Hall and Grace Lutheran Church, and was the Scout Master for the local troop. Leland was elected to serve one term as City Councilman before moving to Caldwell in the summer of 1976.
Leland was an avid sports fan, especially Boise State football where he was a season ticket holder for over 30 years. He shared his love for the Blue and Orange where it later became a three-generation family tradition. He and his wife Jean also enjoyed attending College of Idaho basketball games and never missed an opportunity to follow any of their grandchildren’s events. Amongst many things, Leland loved camping, fishing, and hunting in the mountains of Idaho. After retiring from Hoff’s he and Jean spent many years traveling and later became Arizona snowbirds where they made wonderful memories with lifelong friends. Some of Leland’s favorite pastimes were putting together puzzles and playing games with his family. He loved to beat Jean at Yahtzee.
Leland is survived by his wife Jean of 62 years; three of his children, Rick (Diane) Grint of Horseshoe Bend, Bruce Grint of Nampa, and Cindy (Harvey) Hutton of Nampa; four grandchildren, Nichole (Craig) Codr of Columbus, MT, Casey Grint of Horseshoe Bend, Angie (Chad) Bennett of Cincinnati, and Kendra Hutton of Nampa; and two great-grandchildren, Clayton and Aaron Codr of Columbus, MT.
He was preceded in death by his son Dustin, parents Sydney and Josephine, and brothers Kenneth, Donald, and Garold.
