KEITH GORDON SPIERS
Keith Gordon Spiers was born on August 19, 1943 to his parents Gordon Spiers and Enid Potter Spiers in Pocatello, Idaho. During his youth, their family moved to Joliet, Illinois while his father served in the Navy. They then moved around to follow his father’s job with the railroad. They lived in Homedale, Lava Hot Springs, and Oakley.
He met the love of his life, Marsha, in 1964. The pair started their lives together on February 21, 1966 in Burley, Idaho. The pair lived in Oakley, Idaho before buying their first home together in Heyburn, Idaho. Keith and Marsha started the next chapter of their lives together when they welcomed their first son, Jeff, into the world in Burley, Idaho. The family of three made the move to Boise, Idaho for Keith’s job with the railroad when Jeff was three years old.
Once in Boise, Keith worked two jobs with Booth Fishery and Union Pacific. Keith and Marsha began their next venture when they began leasing a Union Oil station. The Spiers became a family of four when their second son, Darren, was born.
After one of his customers offered Keith a job with Wolf Construction, his world began to change in more ways than he could imagine. After a few years with Wolf Construction, Keith took the leap to start his legacy. Keith branched out and founded Spiers Construction in 1976. Little did the world know, his hard work and determination would start a business that would go on for generations. Around the same time that the company was born, Keith and Marsha welcomed their youngest son, Ryan, into the world. With three kids running around and the start of Spiers Construction, Keith worked seven days a week from before the sun came up, to after it went down to provide for their family.
Spiers Construction got its first big break when it earned a contract for the prison. From there, Keith only worked harder to continue to grow the company with the help of his sons. At the time, Keith and Marsha ran their business out of their home.
Because they had no family close, they started the tradition of an annual Christmas Eve party. It would continue for 30 years. Some of Jeff’s favorite memories with his dad stem from those parties. From laughter to sitting on Santa’s lap even as adults, the memories Jeff and Keith made still bring a smile to Jeff’s face. The memories the family made eventually branched out to Cascade, Idaho when Keith and Marsha bought their cabin. For Marsha and their three boys, the memories made there are something they will always cherish.
For Ryan, seeing how his dad handled some situations still makes him laugh. Ryan remembers when he and his friend Nacho came home after being out all night. He says Nacho got in his car and backed up, scraping the whole side of his car down the front bumper of Keith’s brand-new pickup. Nacho got out of the car to inspect the damage. Even at 1 am, Keith had a response that still makes Ryan laugh. He says after hearing the wreck, Keith came out on the back deck in his tighty whiteys and said to Nacho, “I’m going back inside to get my Glock, if you’re still here when I come out I’m going to kill you!” Nacho was quicker than Keith because he’s still alive.
As Spiers Construction grew, Keith and Marsha made the jump to buy their first commercial property in Nampa. As they added more employees, Keith’s 7-day work weeks never stopped. Yet even with the booming business, Keith still made time for his son’s passions. When the boys began racing, Keith would get to make lifelong memories one racetrack at a time. For Darren, memories made at the racetrack by his dad’s side will live on forever. From help to advice and support, his constant belief in his son fueled Darren’s lasting love for the sport.
From Nampa, Keith and Marsha built a new location for Spiers Construction in Kuna before settling the business in Caldwell. Keith made his mark in his trade, as well as his office. His family still laughs as they remember when he got tired of the magpies sitting in the tree outside his office window. One day, he came up with the solution to crack his window and shoot one of them through the window screen, all while never leaving his office chair or announcing his plan, causing his secretary to hide under her desk in complete surprise. To this day, the bullet hole in the screen still has a home at the office.
The family then sold their home in Boise and their cabin in Cascade before planting roots in Adrian, Oregon. They built their house from the ground up and made it their forever home. Keith and Marsha planned to retire when they moved to Adrian, but Keith had other thoughts. His strong work ethic had him still going to work every day. It wasn’t until they bought their home in Havasu that Keith let himself retire, but only in the winters. The rest of the year he was still at work.
Keith’s will to work went hand in hand with his love for his family. His daughter-in-law, Sandy, remembers Keith’s helpful nature when she and Jeff built their house. She wanted purple and white lilac bushes lining her fence, but she wanted the lilac colors to alternate. Keith didn’t miss a beat. He was over at their house planting her flowers exactly how she wanted. His help for his family was also extended to their animals. His daughter-in-law, Jennifer, says when her and Darren’s dog, Katy, was quilled by a porcupine, Keith was the first one there to help. He laid his belly on top of Katy to keep her still as he got all the quills out. All the while comforting both Jen and Katy.
The next chapter of Keith and Marsha’s lives started when their grandchildren entered the world. Keith had two more bright lights in his life with his grandboys, Tristen and Aiden. Keith started living his life for his grandboys, who he prided himself on greatly. For Marsha, the most special time with Keith was spending time with Tristen and Aiden and seeing Keith experience being a grandpa.
Tristen and Aiden spent a portion of nearly every day with Keith and Marsha. The two boys say their grandpa is the strongest man they know, and they learned what a strong work ethic is through watching him. From laying sprinklers to playing cards, they always had a great time together. Even if it was fixing stuff they broke. The boys still laugh as they remember a time when they had the idea to go shoot at bunnies outside. Keith accused them of shooting his arsenal of 22 ammo, and then found all the holes they shot in his irrigation pipe. The three then spent hours fixing all the holes they shot in the pipe.
Everywhere he went, he thought of his grandboys and would buy them gifts simply because it reminded him of them. His pride overflowed when attending all of their events. Keith and Marsha truly wrapped their lives around their grandboys.
Even with a new generation of Spiers boys running around, Keith was still hard at work. He gained a new love for working when he was able to bring Tristen and Aiden to work with him and teach them his craft.
Darren remembers when he was a young boy going to work with his dad. He has fond memories of when they would go to the pizza parlor for lunch and Keith would give him a handful of quarters before Darren would run off to the arcade. When they weren’t on lunch break, Keith made sure Darren had Tonka truck toys to play with while Keith played in his life-sized one. This became a tradition that Darren carried on with his sons.
As time went on, Marsha and Keith got the opportunity to spend time with their whole family together at family gatherings. Many memories were made at family homes, including their Havasu home. Keith could often be seen riding around in his side by side or cannonballing into the pool after drinking a few Rum and Cokes.
His whole family admired Keith’s sense of humor, even if it wasn’t intentional. The family still laughs as they remember when Keith leaned on the side of their inflatable hot tub during a conversation before falling in and dunking under the water head first.
Keith’s pride in his family skyrocketed when the family business that he started from nothing but a dream, moved into its third generation when Tristen and Aiden took over Spiers Construction. Marsha says Keith beamed with pride and told every single person he talked to.
Keith’s working years slowed when he got sick in 2014. While tough, it became a blessing in disguise since this allowed him to be home more. Keith had more time to spend with his sons, daughter-in-laws, and grandsons. Keith began working out in his shop more, perfecting his woodworking craft. He began making all kinds of woodworking treasures for different members of his family. To this day, Keith’s beautiful creations can be seen scattered throughout his family member’s homes.
Keith battled sickness and was tough through his nine-year fight. The last time it hit him, he had already fought so hard for nine years and had already given every ounce of fight he had. Keith passed peacefully surrounded by his family and their love on January 23, 2023.
Keith is survived by his wife, Marsha, sons Jeff (Sandy) Spiers, Darren (Jennifer) Spiers, Ryan (Carrie) Spiers and grandsons Tristen and Aiden Spiers.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Clyde Edwards, Clairene Edwards and Gerald Spiers.
