Dorothy Mae Salove

Dorothy M. Salove, 86, of Marsing, passed from this life Monday morning, December 4, 2017, at her home surrounded by her loving husband and children following an extended illness.
Dorothy, affectionately known as ‘Dot’ to her family and many friends, was born February 7, 1931, at Caldwell, Idaho, to Orrie and Jessie (Stradley) Hampson, the fifth of five daughters born to the couple. At an early age, Dot moved with her family to Weiser, Idaho, where she began school. The family returned to Caldwell and then Nampa where Dot attended schools.
Dot met John Salove when they were in 9th grade at Nampa and it was love at first sight. They became high school sweethearts and were active in sports with John, captain of the football team and Dot, Homecoming Queen and in student council, John was student body president and Dot was secretary. They were inseparable. They graduated from Nampa High School in May of 1949 and just a day after graduation, they were married on May 28, 1949, at Nampa. John and Dot spent much of their early marriage on the Salove family ranch in the Owyhee Mountains tending to all the ranch duties that were brand new to Dot but she never missed a beat. She worked on the ranch like one of the ranchhands branding cattle, fixing fence and helping to trail cattle spring and fall but she also managed to keep the house and raise a family as though it was a normal every-day thing. And to her it was. She rode horses, drove trucks and equipment, prepared meals for herders and cowboys all the while growing and caring for her family with her beloved John, living primarily at Marsing and Oreana. In their 69 years of marriage, they were rarely apart from one another for more than a day or two.
When it was time to slow down from ranch life, they sold the ranch but subsequently owned several others before buying and operating The Sandbar Restaurant in Marsing, which they ran from 2000 to 2011. Dot kept the restaurant like she did her house, working there every day to keep it clean and ready for patrons just as her home was to any visitor who might stop in. She took great pride in making certain the restaurant like her home – a place people were happy to visit.
Dot loved to play pinochle in her earlier years and she and John spent many evenings on the ranch playing cards winding down from the days work. Her later years saw her become an accomplished painter and many of her paintings hang throughout the Salove house. But mostly she loved spending time with John and her kids, working hard and enjoying family, farm and ranch life in Marsing and Owyhee County. That, above all, was the most important thing to her.
A longtime friend of the Salove family stated, “Dot was the sweetest, most gentle and loving woman ever created. I will always remember her like that. I never saw her any other way. Such an honor and blessing to have known her.” And that truly is how she was. She lived her life with grace and humility and rarely showed any anger toward anyone. She was loving, understanding and supportive to her husband, kids and grandkids and was always involved in their activities whether as a room mother bringing treats to her kids classes at school, chaperoning class field trips or going to games, concerts or other school activities, she was ultra engaged and an active part of their lives and will never be forgotten by many of the kids in school. And, she was a woman of faith and love teaching her children the good ways of living that would lead them to happy and successful lives. She cherished family and friends and those who knew her were forever changed for the better. We her family are so grateful to have had her these many years as our wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Our hearts are broken, our loss Heaven’s gain but we rejoice knowing she is with family and friends and waiting for that joyful time when we shall join her again.
Surviving Dot is her beloved husband of 69 years, John, of Marsing; four children, Tom Salove, of Boise, Neal Salove and his wife Susan, of Parma, Cindy Howarth and her husband Rob, of Marsing, and Dave Salove, of Seattle, Washington; a sister, Jeane McCallister, of Eugene, Oregon; 11 grandchildren, Andy Percifield, Amy Chadez, Adam Percifield, Mary Emmen, Jessie Tookey, J.J. Salove, Ethan Salove, Kacie Salove, Jessica McBride, Matt Salove and Chris Salove; numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Dot was preceded in death by her youngest son, Chris Salove in 2012, by her parents, and by 3 sisters, Betty Chandler, Pauline Hudson and Maxine Hampson. She will be forever remembered just as they are, always in our hearts, never forgotten.
Eternal rest grant unto her oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.
Friends may call at Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell, on Thursday from 1 to 5 pm. A Celebration of Dot’s life will be held at American Legion Post 128 Phipps-Watson Community Center, 126 N. Bruneau Highway, Marsing, Idaho, on Saturday, December 9, 2017, at 1pm. Cremation will precede services with inurnment at a later date in Marsing-Homedale Cemetery.
