Derek N. Vermeer

Derek Norman Vermeer, at age 53 years old from Greenleaf, Idaho went on to be with Jesus on
June 1st, 2021.
Derek was born to Norman and Marie Vermeer on November 27, 1967 in Pomona California.
He and his family moved to Idaho when Derek was 3 years old. There, they started farming
orchards and soon after built and established Vermeer Dairy where Derek got a head start on
learning the ropes of agriculture, which would then become his livelihood.
Derek attended Greenleaf Friends Academy, home of the grizzlies and became an avid football
player in high school. He earned many trophies to show off. He graduated in the class of 1985.
Derek continued his love for farming which included various seed crops, pumpkins, alfalfa, corn
and hops. Derek was known as the best farmer around, he took much pride in his work, making
sure everything was just right.
In his free time Derek volunteered for the Caldwell police department, Wilder water board,
Greenleaf Friends Academy board, and Lions Club.
Derek married Julie Ann DeVries in 1991 and had three beautiful children together. Derek then
created a life of his own for him and his family known as “Vermeer Farms”
Although farm life was very busy, he always looked forward to fall time which meant steelhead
fishing. He was always in his element when he was on the river or anywhere outdoors. Many
times we would hear him say “this is my church”
His favorite place to be was Riggins, Idaho
Derek’s hobbies included Harley riding, camping, fishing, ATV riding and a good game of
cribbage.
Derek will be greatly missed, especially his loud belly laugh that anyone who knew him came to
recognize well.

Derek is survived by Julie Ann Vermeer, his 3 children,
Daughter Ashley Julianne Vermeer born February 28, 1993
Son Derek Peter Vermeer Jr. born April 27, 1996
Daughter Karyssa Katleen Gingerich born December 3, 1998
Son in law Garrett Gingerich
Mother Marie Vermeer Johnson; husband Lynn Johnson
Brother Mike Vermeer; wife Teri Vermeer
Sister Risa Tiegs; husband Leland Tiegs
Brother Klaas Vermeer
Along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Derek was preceded in death by his father, Norman Leon Vermeer.
