Bertram “Bert” Fiskum, age 68, passed away Friday, July 16th, 2021, due to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in Caldwell, ID.
Bert was born in 1953 to Paul and Ruth Fiskum in Minot, ND. Prior to graduating from Drake Public High School in 1971, he suffered an acute mental breakdown, and soon received a diagnosis of schizophrenia at the age of 17. Post-graduation, he worked a variety of jobs and on the family farm. After the passing of his father, Bert and his mother moved to Caldwell, ID in 1979, where he established his own lawn care business for the duration of his working years. In 1986, knowing he was not equipped to be an adequate caregiver, he gave his son up for adoption, who is now in a loving marriage with children.
Bert was well loved for who he was and how he shared himself in his countless letters and wonderfully insightful words to his family and surrounding community. These included many at his home church of Grace Lutheran in Caldwell, and the servers and staff at both Mr. V’s Family Restaurant and the hospital cafeteria where he was a regular. The family extends our sincere gratitude to those who enjoyed and cared for Bert in these places.
Though Bert struggled greatly as he learned to cope with his mental health, he found sustaining hope and relief in knowing Christ Jesus, his Lord. His boldness and love for God’s Truth made him a light to many around him. Penned in a recent letter, Bert said, “It’s been a long road since 1970, but I’ve made it. I have good mental health and I’m well. I’m a happy boy and I feel good.”
Bert is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Ruth Fiskum; and infant brother, Sanford.
Bert is survived by his brother, Ken (Nicki) Fiskum of Cascade, ID; sister, Ellen (Allan) Martwick of Balfour, ND; six nephews and nieces, Mike (Kelli) Fiskum, Jon (Timberly) Fiskum, Darrin (Erin) Fiskum, Eric Martwick, Laura (Josh) Pikka, Emily (Michael) Haggar; and seven great nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 6, 2021 at Grace Lutheran Church, 2700 S Kimball Ave, Caldwell, ID 83605. A burial will take place at the Balfour Cemetery in ND alongside Bert’s parents and brother.
