Norma A. Paynter

February 14, 1925 ~ September 19, 2017 (age 92) 92 Years Old
Norma A. Paynter, 92 of Caldwell, passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 from complications of cancer. She was born February 14, 1925, on her grandfather’s farm in Grand River, Iowa, to Harry H. and Vesta C. Andrew Thompson. In 1928 her family moved to Idaho where she attended Caldwell schools and the College of Idaho. She began her first employment at the law offices of Smith and Ewing at the age of 17 while still in high school. In March, 1947, she met Charles Paynter, Jr. at a meeting of the Caldwell Rod & Gun Club where he became her instructor. Five months later they were married and moved to the family farm north of Caldwell where they raised their three sons, Neil, Brent and Philip.
A few years after the births of her children, she returned to the law firm. In 1961 she was employed by S.S. Steiner, Inc. and remained there for the next 17 years until the business closed. With her children grown, she decided to pursue her earlier plans for a career in nursing. In 1978, at the age of 53, she graduated from Mercy Medical Nursing School and a month later accepted a position at Terry Reilly Health Services (Nampa Clinic) where she remained on staff for the next 27 years, retiring at the age of 79.
Norma became a Christian in her early teenage years and her church remained a large part of her life. She and Charles were charter members of Treasure Valley Christian Church, Caldwell, where she was organist and choir accompanist for many years. The most important part of her life was her husband, their sons and their families. Many are the memories of camping, hunting and fishing trips to the mountains of Idaho and annual trek to find that “special” Christmas tree. A constant in her later years was meeting with Friday Lunch Bunch and Sunday Breakfast Group, which included former schoolmates of all ages, her CHS Class of ’43 reunions, her PEO Chapter and her Small Group at her church.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 69 years, her brother, Kenneth Thompson and her great grand-daughter Jacquelina Paynter.
She is survived by her three sons, Neil (Chris), Brent (Diane) and Philip; her grandsons, Dr. Mitchell (Dr. Julie), Brett (Dustie), Jake (Dawn), Mick (Sue) and Mark; her granddaughters, Tenley (Matt)Schwab, Censia (Cory) Felts, Lindsay (Jacob) Paul, her former daughter-in-law, Victorina Paynter and many beloved great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 26th at Caldwell Presbyterian Church, EPC, 603 Everett St. in Caldwell (New Location). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Boise, Shriners’ Children’s Hospital, Fairfax Rd. and Virginia Street, Salt Lake City, Utah 84102 or the charity of your choice.
