Nina Jane Hurst

September 12, 1924 ~ June 14, 2017 (age 92) 92 Years Old
Nina Hurst passed away on June 14th, 2017 in Caldwell, Idaho.
Nina Jane Hurst was born on September 12, 1924 to John and Effie (Perry) Hurst in Fish Creek, Idaho. She was a feisty and warm-spirited woman with a great sense of humor. When she was almost two years old, Nina lost her mother. Soon after, she and her sisters went to live with their grandmother, Eliza Perry in Ashton and later in Caldwell, while her father did various jobs during the depression.

Throughout her life “Tiny,” as she was nicknamed, lived with several relatives including Fred and Alice Hurst in Hailey and her sister Jean and Al Pyrah in Carey. She worked in the home of Joe and Louise Martin of Caldwell while finishing high school.  Nina graduated from Caldwell High School in 1943 and married Leonard L. Hurst (no relation) in 1944. She held various jobs working for companies like J.R. Simplot and Bell Telephone, where she worked as a switchboard operator. She graduated from Mankato State College and used her degree to pursue her passion for teaching in Albert Lea, MN; Ketchum, ID; Bellevue, ID; Wilder, ID and Yuma, AZ. During this time, Nina and Leonard raised four children and moved from Albert Lea, MN to Bellevue, ID and then to Caldwell, ID.

Upon retirement they became “snowbirds” and lived in Yuma, AZ during the winters.  Leonard passed away in 1998, but Nina continued her annual trips to Yuma which she really enjoyed. She loved going to and spending time with the family at their cabin in Pine, ID. Nina enjoyed quilting and sewing and made over 40 quilts, including special quilts for her children and grandchildren.  She absolutely loved “yard saling” with her daughter and granddaughters and especially spending time outside. She was kind, generous, funny, wise, an amazing teacher and a hell of a cook.

Nina had a huge zest for life! She loved coffee, friends, family, traveling, cooking, and baking (especially her rhubarb pie and peanut butter Rice Krispies treats). Other passions included gardening, restoring and decorating with antiques. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and bridge. She was a soft, rugged, self-sufficient woman who also loved hiking, nature and the outdoors. She loved telling her family about the experiences of her childhood.  She loved fiercely and was very protective of those she loved! Nina was a “real deal” person. She always seemed to be up and full of energy.

Nina is preceded in death by her parents John and Effie Hurst, husband Leonard L Hurst, her sister Cleone Green and son-in-law Ray Kuntz.  She is survived by her children, John and wife Jan Hurst, Jim Hurst, Joe Hurst, Nancy Kuntz, her grandchildren Laurie Kuntz, Lisa and husband Ruben Alvarado, Jamie and husband Robby Bernal, Tori Hurst, Kallie Hurst, Amberdean Hurst, Benjamin Mobley-Hurst, and her great-grandchildren Amea Alvarado and Aubrey and Adalyn Bernal.  She is also survived by her sister, Jean Pyrah of Carey, ID and cousin Jim Hurst, who was more like a brother of Gooding, ID along with many nephews and nieces,  including her namesake Nina Ward of Shoshone, ID.

Nina's family would like to thank Springridge Assisted Living for their exceptional caring and dedicated staff during mom’s stay and 1st Choice Hospice.

A celebration of her life will be held at the Florida Estates Clubhouse, 3304 Golden Glow in Caldwell, Friday, June 23rd between 6-9p.m. Food will be served.
