Henry Howard Mullen passed peacefully on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at this home of the last six years, Karcher Estates, following a very short illness.
For 100 years, Howard loved life. He had wonderful memories and often shared stories of his childhood in Mountain Crest, Arkansas, where he was born to Alfred Lee and Mary Elizabeth (Hill) Mullen on April 5, 1917, the fifth child of six. At age 16, he left home to attend The School of the Ozarks in Missouri. He graduated valedictorian, worked one additional year for the school, then left for adventure in the West, landing in Caldwell, Idaho in 1936. For the rest of his life, he loved the fields, orchards, lakes and mountains of Idaho.
In 1941, he married Ruth Bartles of Parma, Idaho. They made their home in Caldwell, where they raised two daughters, Kathleen and Elaine. Ruth and Howard celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary before Ruth's passing in 2005. Howard’s working career was as a refrigeration engineer for the Simplot Corporation, retiring in 1982.
Howard and Ruth loved their garden (flower and vegetable) and country drives. They enjoyed camping and fishing trips with their children and grandchildren, where he was usually out-fished by his wife. The annual Mullen-Family-Campout remains a tradition to this day. Howard was an avid reader of Western novels and history for his entire life.
He is survived by his two daughters, Kathleen Dowen (Daryl Sallaz) and Elaine Woods (Gary); four grandchildren, Anita Johnson (Kurt), Marcy Fox, Tim Woods (Melissa) and Ken Woods (Stacy); eight great - grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is already missed by us all.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at the Lower Boise Cemetery in Parma Idaho. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.dakanfuneralchapel.com.
