Herbert W. Rettig

Herbert William Rettig died Monday, January 1, 2018 at Genesis Rehabilitation Center in Meridian, Idaho. He was born June 28, 1928 in Fredonia, Kansas, the son of Fredrick W. Rettig and Mildred McGhie Rettig, and brother of M. Joan Messer, of Pratt, Kansas. After serving in the US Navy, Herb returned to Fredonia where he met his wife, Elizabeth, who was a teacher at the local high school. They married on June 13, 1954.
Herb continued his education at the University of Kansas, later moving with Elizabeth to Moscow, Idaho to attend the University of Idaho Law School. After graduation from Law School, Herb and Liz moved to Owhyee County where Herb began his law career as a judge. After a few years, they moved to Caldwell where Herb had a long and distinguished career as an attorney. He practiced law for over forty years, and served as Idaho State Bar President in 1989-90. Herb was presented with the Idaho State Bar Professionalism award in 1993-an honor that he was very proud of.
Herb was an avid fly fisherman and enjoyed spending time fishing at his cabin in McCall. He was involved in community service organizations and was a member of the Lions Club, Elks, Toastmasters, Gem State Fly Fishing Club, and the United Methodist Church.
Herbert is survived by his children, Rosemary Rettig of Star and Rex (Julie) Rettig of Nampa; grandchildren, Wendy Weber of Boise, Chris Rettig of Seoul, Korea, and Alex Rettig of Nampa; as well as 2 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 10th at Dakan Funeral Chapel, 504 S Kimball Ave, Caldwell, Idaho.
